Carry the Amazon on your back. The Yaká Red Backpack is handcrafted by the Xipaya people in the heart of Brazil’s Médio Xingu, using the ancestral encauchado technique — organic cotton naturally waterproofed with fresh Amazon latex and colored with urucum, one of the Amazon’s most sacred natural pigments.
The encauchado technique has been practiced by Amazonian peoples for centuries. Fresh latex is hand-applied to organic cotton cloth in the Tukayá village, then naturally vulcanized — creating a 100% waterproof, chemical-free fabric that carries the living knowledge of the forest. No synthetic coatings. No petroleum derivatives. Just forest intelligence.
The Povo Xipaya live in the Tukayá village along the Terra do Meio, one of Brazil’s most biodiverse regions. Through the Bossapack partnership — alongside ONG Origens Brasil and Mercur — the community learned to apply fresh rubber latex directly in the village, transforming their ancestral knowledge into sustainable income. Each backpack sold keeps the forest standing, keeps the rubber tappers working, and keeps the Xipaya culture alive.
“We started in 2021 with two extractivists. By 2023, 30 people from the village were involved in the project — including youth and women.” — Cláudio Martins, Bossapack Founder
